When you step into a bookstore, you’ll see hundreds of picture books: short books with easy to understand stories and gorgeous illustrations. But they weren’t always that way. In fact, picture books as we know them today have only existed for about 100 years. So who were the women who helped reinvent the genre?

Bold as Brass is an engaging 30 minute talk about picture books from the 1920s-1940s and the women who made them, including Ruth Krauss, Wanda Gág, and Virginia Lee Burton. It can be adapted for writers or general interest groups.
